Back, in 1845, Samuel A Maverick registered his cattle brand as no brand at all. This allowed him to claim any unbranded cows
found in the neighborhood as his own. Shortly thereafter any unbranded
calves began to be called mavericks. By 1892, the word was being used to
refer to any masterless person; anyone who -- according to the Oxford
English Dictionary -- was roving and casual.
